Samantha Hawley - A Girl That We Could All Learn A Lot From

When life give you lemons make lemonade! I totally believe that our lives are what we make them. Yesterday I had two back-to-back appointments cancel last minute. I understand that things happen in my clients' lives, but I was disappointed nonetheless.

Yesterday I just so happened to bring my new camera with me to work and my unplanned free time left me with a couple of hours to experiment. My chic coworker, Samantha Hawley, came to work looking very stylish so I asked if she would be my muse while she was in between clients. She obliged my request and I was thrilled with the results of our impromptu adventure and had to share them here with all of you!

Sam happens to be one of my favorite human beings on this planet! She is genuine, quirky,  strong, compassionate, carefree, and edgy among many other amazing qualities. She has so many facets to her personality and I felt like I was able to capture several of them.

One of my favorite things about Samantha is that she is so warm and friendly. You will never hear her say anything negative about anyone or anything. She is very upbeat, positive, and encouraging. Her clients love her because she is always smiling, laughing, and is never afraid to be herself.

Sam also has this effortless cool quality about her. Her style will remind you of an Urban Outfitters model and she is so striking you might think that maybe modeling was one of her prior jobs before pursuing her life as a cosmetologist.

Of course Samantha is totally unaware of her natural beauty. Even as I was taking these photos, I would show her the back of my camera and she would ask, "Is that really me?!?". She literally showed up to work looking exactly as she did in these photos. She didn't alter her makeup or change up her outfit, this is how this gorgeous girl arrived to to the workplace. I gushed about how cute she was all morning, yet until she saw these photos she didn't give her appearance a second thought.

Sam is also extremely talented in her craft. Not only does she have a great work ethic, but she has an undeniable gift when it comes to cutting, styling, and coloring hair. The photos she posts of her clients on her Instagram often look like the photos that everyone has pinned a thousand times on Pinterest.

With her blithe disposition, this girl makes friends wherever she goes. She is always great for a laugh and she doesn't take herself too seriously. You never know what she will do next. She might break out in song, bust a dance move, or make the funniest facial expression ever just to make you smile.

Samantha is also a devout Christian. Her faith is one of the most important things in her life so she pours her heart into helping youth grow spiritually as well. She is very involved in her church because she is passionate about helping others find hope in Christ. Instead of focusing on herself, she is continually working to help others.

We could all learn so much from Sam. Life is too short to not be ourselves, and be true to what we are passionate about.

A Girl That Will Change The World

I love my job for many reasons, but one of the best things about my job is that I get to know amazing people. I meet people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Some of these people I know only for a short while, and others I'm blessed to have in my life for years.

One of the gems that I've known for over 10 years is Macy Sheaman. I remember years ago she was just a little girl sitting on her mom's lap in the row in front of me at church. Every Sunday during the worship service she would look back and me and smile. She has a sweetness and innocence that she has carried with her into her young teenage years.

There is so much more to this girl than meets the eye. She is smart, motivated, goal-oriented, and an inspiring young entrepreneur.

When I used Macy as a hair model nearly two years ago, I was talking with her about her interests and discovered this girl had started her own business. Macy had started attending craft fairs and created an Etsy shop online to sell her items. She made beautiful jewelry,  scarves, and also sold her photography work. Over the last year, she analyzed her sales trends and realized that her most sought after items were her crocheted pieces. So she adjusted her little shop and began to make as many crocheted pieces as possible.

Did I mention she that at the time she wasn't even 13?

You might think that someone her age probably doesn't make things that you want to wear or something of high quality... guess again. Her items are all well made and beautiful. Her scarves, hats, and other items become staples in your closet. You will even start to change what you are wearing just so it matches your new scarf!

Macy's items were so popular that she was selling out and started to have requests for custom orders. Since Christmas 2014, Macy has worked very hard to build up enough inventory to satisfy the demand, though her pieces will probably sell out again before Christmas.

Her scarves and cowls aren't all this girl makes. She also makes gorgeous hats, headbands, camera straps (my personal favorite), and knitwear for kids. Also, a portion of her proceeds from all of her sales benefit Samaritan's Purse.

Macy has also built a solid following on social media just by posting her work. She has over 3000 followers on Instagram!  You can find her on Instagram @imcrazyforcraftin and on Facebook at I'm Crazy For Craftin'. To view her gorgeous handiwork check her out at https://www.etsy.com/shop/ImCrazyForCraftin

I am confident that Macy is just at the beginning stage of an awesome career. Follow her on social media to see what this amazing girl is up to.

Makeup Heros

I can't help myself around it. Colors, textures, and even beautiful packaging seduce me. I'm always hunting for the next hero of my makeup kit. Whether working on set , on a bride, a client getting ready for an event, or just myself I'm excited to use my latest exciting products.

Years ago I worked for Neiman Marcus in their beauty department. I had the opportunity to learn about many different brands of makeup, skincare and even fragrance. I loved that every few months each of the brands would send out someone to train us on the latest and greatest from their brand. We learned about the staple products, what special ingredients made them amazing, and what they were coming out with that was going to be the next 'it' product. It was always so much fun flashing around my latest lip color, gushing about the serum that was making my skin glow, and talking about why that certain mascaras made my lashes look like falsies.

Makeup has always been a love of mine, and now I'm so excited to share all of my greatest finds with you! I hope that in reading this blog maybe you will find your own hero products that you have not tried before, maybe you'll see an interesting brand that you had not noticed before, or maybe you will see unique ways that I use these products to achieve something totally different than you thought was possible.

Today I'm just going to start with the lip color that got me 'in'. I had been working with several different photographers doing hair for photo shoots, but it wasn't till last December that I finally had the opportunity to actually do hair AND makeup for a shoot. I had been a makeup artist for years and had the skills, but just had not had the opportunity to use my skills on a shoot. I was so excited to work with this amazing photographer, wardrobe stylist, and model. Molly, the model, was just beautiful. Her skin was basically perfect and she had stunning features.

We wanted an easygoing sort of look for a natural girl. I knew I had the perfect lip color, Mac's Viva Glam V. It made my day when the photographer saw my color choices and said that I had great instincts for color. This color is beautiful on just about everyone. It is that perfect color that doesn't look like you are trying too hard. If you are looking for that perfect color that you can wear everyday and not look too fussy, then this IS for you. This lipstick was my total hero that day. This is that color that you can always leave in your bag and it will almost always be perfect for any occasion.

I totally believe that using this on set opened so many doors for me that I never even knew were possible. Since then, that photographer gave me the names of a few other awesome photographers to work with and my freelance makeup opportunities have just been growing ever since.

How will this lip color inspire you?

Starburst Colormelt

One of my favorite things to do as a hair artist is to play with color. The possibilities are endless. You can find inspiration everywhere.

I am so excited to share with you a color that I created using Lanza haircolor. This sweet color is candy inspired. These beautifully blended colors should just bring a smile to your face.

Hope you enjoy!

Dream Big

I have been obsessed with the television show The Voice since I first started watching it in 2011. For years I have said to my family that if I could ever work for any show or any movie or anything of that sort that The Voice would be my #1 choice. The hair and makeup on that show is my favorite part and I anxiously watch every week to see what they will do with the contestants. Well, I didn't get to work for The Voice. But I feel like I've come as close to that dream as one possibly can by doing hair for one of their contestants.

I was asked by a good friend to do hair for a photo shoot for a local girl that wanted to be a professional singer. Her name is Lyndsey Elm and she is both beautiful and sweet. A couple of times during the shoot, she would burst out into song and it was obvious she had talent. Of course, I jokingly said to her mom that if she ever needed a hairstylist for when she makes it big, that I'd love to be there and do her hair.

Well guess what...  a few weeks after the shoot that beautiful girl got to announce that she had auditioned for The Voice. I was ecstatic! So of course, I was anxious to watch the show. Sure enough, the judges heard the talent that I recognized and she got a four-chair turn (for those of you that don't watch the show, this is a HUGE deal)! Yes... I was totally screaming when it happened.

Twice since that photo shoot this amazing family has asked me to do her hair for local events and I'm so excited to help her on her journey. But in many ways, I feel like I'm living part of my dream too. I may not be doing the hair for the actual show, but doing hair for someone on the show that has a chance to win is a dream come true!

I feel honored to be a part of Lyndsey Elm's journey, even if it is only a small part of her local appearances at home. But this whole experience will be a highlight of my career that I will never forget. The best part of the whole thing is that Lyndsey is someone that you want to cheer on. She is so easy going, genuine, and has such a huge heart that I hope she wins. And if she doesn't win, at least she gets to use this as an opportunity to share her gift with the world.

Below are some of my favorite images from the shoot. Hope you all enjoy.
